Friends of St Elphin's - Community Event: Summer 2024
In 2024, we agreed to do some community outreach with the community interst group 'Friends of St Elphin's'. This was after having a couple of meetings with former mayor and councillor for the Howley area Jean Flaherty. We proposed several activities, including making Norman castles, walking tours, beating of bounds, poetry, plus lots more.In the end, we completed a castle drawing exercise in April with the children from the estate, as well as a walking tour of the former motte area.
November 2023 - A Journey with Archaeologists
Towards the end of 2023, we invited a leading team or archaeologists from The University of Manchester to come and visit the site around St Elphin's to explore what old maps of the area might tell us about the past.
Before visiting the site the team read archaeology reports from several different periods to gain an understanding of the site.During the visit, these very smart people started to look at the old maps, contemporary aerial images, and began to piece together the history of the site.A a moment of genuine began to emerge as they discovered the outline of the old motte and bailey castle. This amazing moment crystallised our desire to share this with other people and would go on to form the basis of our walking tour the following Easter with children from the estate, with the help of the friends of St Elphin's group.
A special thanks to all involved including: Kelsey Overton; Jordan Perris; Mattie Hudson; Alex Lonsdale; Jenny Walker; Dr John Piprani; Mary; and Laura Thompson.
